A chilled water unit (also called a chiller) is an indirect expansion cooling system. This means it uses an intermediate fluid to transfer “cold” to the emitters. There is no refrigerant circulating through the system: in the case of a chilled water unit, water (pure or glycolated) serves as the intermediary fluid, used here as the heat transfer fluid.
